A Legacy of Pool Craftsmanship Since 1979
Campbell Landscape has been shaping Silicon Valley backyards since 1979. In that time we've installed hundreds of pools — from modest urban retreats to sprawling estate showpieces spanning tens of thousands of gallons. We know what works here: the Santa Clara soil, the slope challenges, the county permit process, and exactly which engineering details keep a pool beautiful and structural for decades.
Every pool we build is a custom design. We don't sell cookie-cutter gunite shells from a catalog. Your pool is designed around your site, your lifestyle, and your vision — then built by licensed craftsmen who take personal pride in the work.
Our Design Process
Good pools begin long before the first shovel breaks ground. Our process is built to eliminate surprises and ensure the finished result matches what you imagined — or exceeds it.
1. Site Consultation & Analysis
We start with an on-site visit to evaluate topography, soil conditions, drainage patterns, easements, and setback requirements. In Silicon Valley neighborhoods like Los Altos Hills, Woodside, and Atherton, sloping sites are the norm — and managing water table and lateral earth pressure is critical before any pool shell is placed.
2. Conceptual Design & Rendering
We develop a site-specific concept using CAD drawings and 3D renderings so you can walk through the layout before committing. Pool shape, depth profile, waterline tile, coping, decking material, and all adjacent hardscape are resolved at this stage.
3. Engineering & Permitting
All pools in Santa Clara County require structural engineering. We prepare the full permit package and coordinate with your local building department — whether that's San Jose, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Saratoga, or Palo Alto. We handle the bureaucracy so you don't have to.
4. Construction
Excavation, steel reinforcement, plumbing, electrical, gunite shell, coping, tile, plaster, and start-up — all performed by our own licensed crews. We do not subcontract the core pool structure. Only the final landscaping and electrical finish work (if required) goes to vetted partners.
Pool Types We Build
Vanishing Edge / Infinity Pools
A vanishing edge pool creates the illusion that water stretches to the horizon — especially dramatic on hillside properties in Los Altos Hills, Woodside, or Saratoga. The engineering requires a catch basin sized to handle the full overflow volume, a properly engineered wall structure, and precision water-level control. We've built vanishing edge pools with drops of 3 feet to over 20 feet. Each one requires custom engineering and careful coordination with structural engineers.
Freeform Natural Pools
Freeform pools mimic natural bodies of water with curved shapes, rock waterfalls, and integrated grottoes. They're ideal for properties where a more organic, nature-inspired aesthetic suits the home. We source boulders from local quarries and design rock work to look as if the geology has been there for centuries.
Formal / Geometric Pools
Clean lines and architectural symmetry define the formal pool. These are the right choice for Mediterranean, Transitional, or Contemporary homes — especially in communities like Atherton, Palo Alto, and Cupertino where strong home architecture calls for a matching pool language. We build rectangular, L-shaped, and classic oval forms with precision coping lines and consistent waterline tile patterns.
Spas & Swim Spas
Standalone spas range from intimate two-person designs to large social spas with cascading waterfalls connecting to the main pool. Swim spas are a growing choice for properties where a full-length pool isn't feasible — a long, narrow vessel with a propulsion system for endless swimming in place. Both can be heated to any temperature year-round; our plumbing systems are designed for rapid heat recovery using high-efficiency gas heaters.
Pool Remodeling & Renovation
Older gunite pools often need resurfacing, new coping, updated tile, and modern equipment. We handle full renovations: draining, sandblasting or chipping old plaster, applying new pebble tec or aggregate finish, replacing main drains and skimmers to meet current code, and upgrading to variable-speed pumps and smart automation systems. If your pool was built before 2008, the drain suction safety requirements have likely changed — we'll bring it up to current standards.
Rock Waterfalls & Grottoes
Natural rock waterfalls and cave grottoes are some of the most requested features in our pools. We design and build these as structural elements — not decorative veneer. Boulders are placed with rebar and gunite backing so the feature will outlast the pool itself. Water features require separate circulation pumps to maintain flow without overworking the main filtration system; we specify and plumb those independently.
Grotto designs range from a simple cave recess behind a waterfall to a full swim-behind cave with seating, LED lighting, and incorporated spa jets. These features are among our most photographed work.
What to Expect: Project Timeline
Pool construction is a significant project — here's a realistic overview of how long each phase takes in the Bay Area:
- Design & permitting: 4–8 weeks — dependent on complexity and local jurisdiction queue times. Los Altos Hills and Woodside often require environmental review; Cupertino and San Jose are generally faster.
- Excavation: 3–7 days — typically 7–10 days for a large vanishing edge pool.
- Steel & plumbing: 5–10 days.
- Gunite: 1–2 days for the shell spray.
- Coping & tile: 1–2 weeks.
- Plaster / surface finish: 1 day spray, 2–3 weeks curing before filling.
- Start-up & commissioning: 1 week.
Total elapsed time from permit approval to first swim: typically 3–4 months for a standard residential pool, 4–6 months for a complex vanishing edge or multi-feature project.
Pool Equipment & Automation
We spec all equipment to match the pool's size, usage patterns, and your preferences for maintenance. Standard offerings include variable-speed pumps (which reduce electrical costs by 60–80% vs. single-speed), saltwater chlorination systems, robotic cleaners, and smart automation controllers that let you manage everything from your phone. We also install booster pumps for floor cleaners, in-floor cleaning heads, and dedicated spaside pumps.
For automation, we work with Pentair IntelliTouch, Jandy Aqualink, and Hayward OmniHub — selecting the system based on equipment compatibility and the degree of control you want over lighting, heat, water features, and cleaning schedules.
Pricing Factors
Pool construction costs in Silicon Valley vary significantly based on site conditions and feature scope. Here are the primary cost drivers:
- Pool size and depth: Larger or deeper pools require more gunite, more steel, more water, and more chemicals to maintain — all adding to cost.
- Site conditions: Sloping sites require more excavation and often engineered retaining walls. Rocky ground slows digging and may require blasting (rare but happens in Los Altos Hills).
- Water feature complexity: A simple waterfall might add [cost varies]. A full grotto with integrated spa and LED lighting can add [cost varies].
- Infinity edge: Vanishing edge pools typically add [cost varies] over a comparable standard pool, due to engineering, catch basin, and precision water-level controls.
- Surface finish: Standard plaster is the most economical; pebble tec or aggregate finishes add [cost varies]; glass tile can add Contact us+.
- Equipment and automation: Saltwater systems, variable-speed pumps, and smart controllers add [cost varies] over baseline equipment.
- Decking: Natural stone (flagstone or granite) runs [cost varies] per sq ft installed; concrete is [cost varies] per sq ft; wood decking varies by material.
We provide a detailed line-item estimate after the site visit, with no hidden fees. We don't do low-bid bidding — our estimates reflect what it actually costs to build it right the first time.
